Pumpkins in the Fall Season Activity
By: Teacher Claudia Cázares
The purpose of this activity is to nurture your child’s development and expand on their creative play. Children learn more when activities are introduced during spontaneous unstructured play. Especially if you incorporate the seasons or holidays. And always remember to have fun during play time.
Activity:
Pumpkins in the Fall Season
Age Group: This activity can be adapted for all ages
What you do?
The Fall season has begun, how exciting! This time I invite you to have the children look at all the pumpkins that are plentiful around this time. When looking at pumpkins, ask open ended questions, like what is it made of? In what ways are these different? etc. You can explore during a store visit, or by visiting a pumpkin patch. Allow your child to see, smell and feel the pumpkins also describe the sizes, compare, classify and sort by size or color. You can also implement an exploration table where they can scoop out the inside of the pumpkin, or collect the seeds for harvesting or cooking. Finally use your pumpkin by cooking up an easy home receipt (pie, bread, muffins, etc.) and allow your child to be a part of the prepping and cooking. Have Fun! Happy Fall to ALL!!
Vocabulary:
Fall/seasons
5 Senses (especially smell, taste, and feel)
Observe
Pumpkin/ Pumpkin Patch
Math concepts (how many?)
Colors/shapes/size
What they learn?
Make observations – by pointing out the different types of pumpkins growing in a pumpkin patch or the different pumpkins in the grocery store, you are teaching them to be observant.
To share their observations and communicate their thoughts – Expression of how they see the world and how they feel about it is an important life skill.
Explore – Children naturally want to explore, joining them and engaging with them in their exploration strengthens the bond between you.
Discovery – Discovering new things and objects will inspire your child to ask questions and continue their learning.
Open ended questions – stimulates more language use, acknowledge that there can be a solution to one problem, affirm children’s ideas, and encourages creative thinking
