Preschooler: Cognitive Development

4 Years

Videos about Preschooler Cognitive Development

Six Core Strengths for Healthy Child Development
At four your preschooler may be able to recognize some letters if taught and may be able to print their own name.  She can also recognize familiar words in simple books or signs like the STOP sign.   She now can count to 7 or greater out load and match a number of items to the correct numeral.  Imaginary play is essential.  You will always find a dramatic play area in high quality preschool environments.  Encourage this type of play in your home with dress-up clothes, tea sets, play tools, etc.

Your child knows all his basic colors like red, yellow, green and orange.  Your child can now begin to recognize people, animals and other objects in his drawings as he becomes better at using his pencil, crayons and markers. Your child can now write their first and last name from memory.  Practice writing often with your child so that they can fully master this skill.

Once your child has started Kindergarten, talk to your child's teacher often and ask what you should be working on at home.  Your child's teacher can tell you what areas of his or her learning needs additional support from you at home.  Work on developing good study habits early so it does not become an issue later on in his education.
