Toddler: Social/Emotional Development

2 Years

Picture
Your toddler can play alongside others and recognizes when another person is happy or sad.  She begins to show some independence by trying to dress herself and claims certain articles are her own.  She may offer toys to others but really wants to keep toys for herself.  She can usually take turns.  She may become frustrated easily and can imitate parents and caregivers.  She will look at you when you speak to her.

3 Years

You may notice that your toddler is showing a preference for one parent (often the parent of the opposite sex).  She can show affection to younger children by hugging and kissing.  She enjoys playing alone but can also play briefly with other children, but still does not cooperate or share well.  She can answer the question, “Are you a boy or a girl?”  She can repeat rhymes and songs or dances for others.  She may also enjoy playing “house”.
